About the Gallery Database

The NIVAL collection of Gallery material is contained in nearly 700 files on individual Irish galleries, museums and art centres. The collection provides an in-depth account of the history of visual arts exhibition in Ireland over the last century.

The files contain a wealth of material including newspaper clippings, press releases, programme brochures, group exhibition catalogues and price lists, correspondence, photographs and slides.

The creation of electronic records is currently underway. Once completed, the Gallery Database will be searchable under the following fields: gallery name, location/ county, exhibition title, year, artist name, and media.

As with the Artists’ Database, the records of the Gallery Database are being abstracted from the hard copy files of the Library. The data records for each Gallery will therefore document the contents of the collection file and will not necessarily provide a comprehensive record of the activities of the gallery.
